Plant a Tree for the Jubilee

A Message from HM Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire

Sent on behalf of HM Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire Helen Nellis

Dear Colleagues and Friends

In 2022 we will be celebrating the Platinum Jubilee of Her Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth II.  As part of this celebration, the Bedfordshire Lieutenancy is supporting the National Initiative known as, ‘The Queen’s Green Canopy’, a legacy project which will see huge numbers of celebratory trees planted throughout the nation.

Our aim in Bedfordshire is to encourage all parts of our beautiful county, both rural and urban settings, to become involved in planting trees for the Jubilee, whether it be a single tree in a garden, a community group sponsored specimen tree or a significantly large, planted area.

In addition to honouring Her Majesty’s great service to our country, this project will also establish a long-term heritage for future generations whilst supporting the green agenda and climate change mitigation.

I am working with many enthusiastic individuals and organisations throughout Bedfordshire to make a real impact during the two planting seasons spanning the Platinum Jubilee Year i.e.. October to March commencing 2021 and the same period in 2022. Hugely supportive are our three local authorities who are cooperating closely with the experts from the Forest of Marston Vale.

The Queen’s Green Canopy website https://link.edgepilot.com/s/7f1578c7/L_X9Pg1V-02eC4KFSGXUlA?u=https://queensgreencanopy.org/ provides general information and advice. It would be wonderful to see the involvement of our schools, colleges, universities, community groups, faith groups, businesses, farmers – indeed everyone!

Please be sure to plant your trees appropriately, care for them well and remember to “pin” your tree(s) on the Queen’s Green Canopy map on the website as the official register of planting.

I hope you are as enthusiastic as I am and will contribute to this momentous legacy project. One hundred years from now, Bedfordshire children will play under the branches of the trees we have planted and smile.

With kindest regards

Helen Nellis
