Charter Market history unveiled

Mayor Jonathan Woodhead and Deputy Lieutenant Ruth Lloyd MBE JP DL officially unveiled reproductions of Biggleswade’s historic Charter Market certificates, which granted the town the right to hold a market in 1227.

Biggleswade received full market town status that year from King Henry III, following an earlier confirmation by King John. Over the centuries, the market has grown from weekly fairs into the Charter Market we know today, still a key part of town life. For more about the history of the town click here

Various Town Councillors were also there for the unveiling, braving the cold and wet weather alongside the Mayor and Deputy Lieutenant.

Next year will mark the 800th anniversary of the Charter Market, which the Town Council plans to commemorate with a range of events across the town — more details to follow.
